The Rebels of Gas Street

Grass Roots Theatre Youth Group's last production: The Rebels of Gas Street by Jan Needle, adapted by Sylvia Le Breton was performed at Darton College in Kexborough, Barnsley on May 3rd and 4th.
The story of The Rebels of Gas Street is based upon fact. Following the example of their fathers, who were striking to gain a living wage, schoolchildren did go on strike in the long, hot summer of 1911. With the September rain, the strike soon collapsed, resulting in no obvious signs of improvement for the pupils, in either education or classroom conditions. Three years later many of the older school pupils were fighting and dying on the battlefields of France.
Grass Roots last performed this play twenty years ago in May 1993 at Cawthorne Primary School. Some of the original cast members will be in the audience on the opening night to see our latest production!
